Vaughan Regional Medical Center Shares it's 2023 Community Benefit Report
September 25, 2024
SELMA, Alabama September 1, 2024 – Vaughan Regional Medical Center today published its community benefit and economic impact report for the 2023 calendar year. The report highlights many of the ways the hospital positively contributes to Selma and the Dallas County area while supporting the health and well-being of those who live and work in the region.
“Our purpose at Vaughan Regional Medical Center is to provide the best care to the sick who come through our doors and promote wellness for everyone else,” said David McCormack, CEO of Vaughan. “But as a large employer and taxpayer, our hospital also has a tremendous impact on the Selma area’s overall health, as this report details. We view it as an honor to be entrusted with the care of so many and embrace our responsibility to help lift our community, be it through providing charitable care or supporting charitable organizations.”
Vaughan Regional’s 2023 community benefit report details the hospital’s continued efforts to meet the area’s growing healthcare needs by welcoming new providers, expanding service lines and continually investing in its facilities and healthcare technology. For example, in 2023, Vaughan Regional added 35 affiliated providers and made nearly $600,000 in capital improvements, including investments in a hospital-wide digital monitor system, a Glidescope and stretchers for the emergency department, an orthopedic table, updated Operating Room equipment, and an ultrasound.
Additionally, Vaughan Regional provided $4.2 million in charitable or uncompensated health services to those in need, demonstrating its continued commitment to ensuring everyone has access to care, regardless of their ability to pay.
Vaughan Regional Medical Center is also devoted to creating environments where providers want to practice and employees want to work. In 2023, the hospital distributed approximately $22 million in salaries, wages, and benefits for its 600 employees, and contributed $50,000 in professional development and tuition assistance so its team members have the opportunity to learn and improve the care they provide their patients.
The report shares several examples of how Vaughan Regional is continually seeking ways to make a positive impact in the communities it serves, extending far beyond the physical walls of its facilities. Last year, for instance, the organization paid more than $8 million in provider, payroll, property, and sales taxes, displaying its commitment to fiscal responsibility in an effort to boost the area’s economic well-being. The hospital is also honored to have supported local activities and organizations that contribute to the community, including Alabama Hospital Associates, Alabama Teen Challenge, Alabama Wildlife Foundation, Blackbelt Benefit Group, Boy Scouts, Central Alabama Child Advocacy, Delta Waterfowl, Distinguished Young Women, Evans Foundation, Local High School Sports Program, Selma Charity League, and Selma/Dallas County Chamber, among others.
“We believe that by supporting organizations seeking to uplift the community, we are advancing the overall health of the area,” added McCormack. “Our relationship with Selma is a partnership built, over decades, upon mutual support ‒ support we certainly appreciate as the area’s healthcare provider of choice.”
